Throughout this project I aimed to capture the essence of
location within photography. The way in which I captured and displayed location
within photography. In order to do this I completed a series of tasks which
allowed me to explore location photography and how location has a large impact
upon a photograph and how it is taken. The tasks which I completed within this
project helped me gain a better understanding of location photography and how
the location a photograph is taken in makes a big impact on the photograph
itself. During the first task which I completed I was asked to visit a number
of locations, both indoor and outdoor, that fit into certain genres such as historical,
fashion and travel. I found that some elements of this task were much easier
than others as finding things to photograph within the travel genre in an
outdoor location proved to be easy as there are a lot of cars, buses and other
modes of transport on the roads however I found this genre much more difficult to
complete within the indoor location as it is not common to fins things such as
cars in an indoor location. This task taught me that different locations are
more suited to some genres more than others and that some genres within
photography are more suited to indoor locations than outdoor locations and vice
versa. The second part of this task
required me to choose an inanimate object and take this to the locations which I
visited during the first part of this task. The aim of this task was to make
the location the main priority within the photograph. However, this did not necessarily
mean that the location would always be the main focus of the photograph, it
just meant that the location of the photograph would be the only thing to
change from one photograph to the next as the main subject would always be the
inanimate object which I chose to photograph. This part of the task taught me
the importance of location within photography and how not every location will
be suitable for each photograph which you choose take as the object which is
the subject of the photograph will not always fit in within the location you
have chosen to photograph in. This part of the task has highlighted how
important it is to choose the right location when planning a photoshoot. The
second task which I completed during this project was all about the composition
of photographs. During this task I looked at compositional techniques such as
rule of thirds and different angles such as high, low and birds eye angles. While
completing this task I learned that the composition of a photograph is very
important as this determines where the eye is directed to when looking at a
photograph. The composition of a photograph determines which part of the
photograph is seen first and which parts go unnoticed until later. Once I had
explored the composition of photography and researched location within
photograph, I was then asked to start the panning for my final show reel. I
completed my planning in two parts, I first wrote out a written plan,
explaining ideas which I had, then I later expanded on this by creating a story
board of my ideas. Within this story board I roughly sketched out how I wanted
each of the photographs I was planning to take to look and underneath each
small sketch I wrote a little about the location of each photograph, the lighting
I was planning on using and what was included within the photograph if the
sketch was not too clear. I felt the need to put a small explanation of what
the photograph would be of underneath the sketch as I feel that I lack a bit of
artistic ability and find it difficult to draw pictures clearly. Once I had completed
this, I filled out a risk assessment sheet then completed the photoshoot which I
had planned. After this I was asked to research royalty free music and in doing
this I found that royalty free music is music without copyright meaning it is
legal to use in any sort of publication without any repercussions. After I had
completed a bit of research on this matter I then found a piece of royalty free
music which I likes and processed to put together my showreel. To create my
showreel I used photoshop to combine all of the images I had taken along with the
track or royalty free music which I had also found to fit with the theme of my
showreel. Putting this showreel together was a new experience for me as before
this project, I had never used photoshop in such a way so each step that I took
to complete this showreel was new and something which I had to learn. Once I had
got the hang of creating the showreel, I found it relatively easy to do as I only
found it a bit tricky in the beginning as it was a new skill which I had to
learn. Within this project I feel that I have improved my time management
skills from the last project as I have not found it too stressful to manage to
meet deadline this time. If I could redo this project, one thing I would change
would be that I would have spent more time looking for better locations to take
photographs in during the first couple of tasks which I completed as I feel
that they are a little dull as they are just locations in and around the centre
of Bradford. If I was to re do this project I would try to branch out a little
so I could photograph some new locations which I have not photographed before. This
would add extra interest to the photoshoots which I created and add more
interest to m project in general. Overall I feel that this project was
successful as I completed each of the tasks provided to the best o0f my ability
and thoroughly enjoyed learning about the importance and significance of
location photography.

Task 4a - Royalty Free Music
Royalty free music is music which is mainly downloaded from
the internet for use within videos and projects of all shapes and sizes. The
term royalty free refers to a type of licensing agreement which allows the
person who buys a piece of music to use said piece of music as much as they
like and for as many different projects as they like while only making one
fixed payment if this is required. Music which does have royalties attached to it comes at a fee each time the
piece of music is used for an advertisement or whatever the piece has been
intended for, this means that each time the music is played, the cost of the
royalties is sent to the creator. However, royalty free music has a one time
payment when you first purchase the track and no additional costs for each time
the music is used meaning the person who wishes to buy the track does not have
to pay additional fees each time they wish to use the piece of music. A lot of
people believe that royalty free music is free, however, this is not necessarily
the case. Some of the creators of the royalty free music may make their work
available for download for free as they just want to get their music out there
and known however some other creators charge a small fee for downloading the
track initially simply because it is a product they have created and do not
want to give it away for nothing if they have put a lot of hard work and effort
into it. A lot of the time though, the price of the of the track is not too
pricey and they are often affordable for a lot of people. This is because royalty free means free of
royalty, not free of cost meaning the creator of the track is entitled to
charge as much or as little as they wish for the music which they create. There
are various websites which are great for finding royalty free music in order to
use in projects such as this, a couple of websites which I found particularly
useful were Bensound.com and purple-planet.com. Both of these websites are free
to download music from and offer a wide range of royalty free music. Below I
have shown some of the tracks which I liked, these tracks are nice calm and
gentle tracks which I thought would be perfect to tie into my theme of a cup of
tea as this is quite a gentle subject.
Task 3 - planning
Initial ideas:
To begin with, i had a few ideas of inanimate objects which i could potentially use within this project. Some of the objects i considered using for this project include:
Planning:
For my final show reel, I have chosen to carry out the mug idea. For this photoshoot i will take various photographs to show events in which a mug goes through in an average day. For this photoshoot I will show actual events which a standard mug usually goes through and will not try to personify the mug and make it go on adventures like I would have done had i chosen to photograph a stuffed toy. This photoshoot and show reel will tell the story of a mug, starting in the kitchen, in the cupboard where the mugs are kept. The mug will then be moved to the worktop where the kettle is kept. a cup of tea will then be made in the mug. The mug of tea will then be moved to the second location, the living room, where the mug will be photographed at different stages of fullness while next to various other objects which will hopefully suggest activities which are taking place around the mug. For example, the mug will be shown full of tea next to a book, then empty next to the same book. this will suggest that the owner of the mug is drinking the tea from it while enjoying the book. The end of the photoshoot and show reel will show the mug being put into the dish washer then being placed back into the cupboard where it began. I feel that starting and ending the photoshoot and show reel with the cup in the same location will tie the whole thing together nicely. This photoshoot will take place in my home within two locations, the kitchen and the living room. As this photoshoot will take place in my home, this means that I will not have to travel and any travel expenses for this photoshoot will be non existent making the shoot easy to complete. I will most likely be shooting these images in the time I have after college meaning that I will be relying on artificial lighting from the ceiling lights in my house and the flash on my camera. I feel that this will work well though as i will be able to properly control how much light is shed onto the object and surrounding area.
Story boards:
In addition to the the written planning, I also created a story board of my ideas for the photoshoot. here is the story board which I created:

- A notepad

Task 2 - Composition
I was asked to explore the use of composition within photography through practical research. in order to do this i was asked to explore different aspects of composition such as angles, format, rule of thirds, leading lines, linear perspective and aerial perspective. each photograph taken is composed of at least one of these aspects whether it has been intentional or not. whilst carrying out my practical research on this matter I aimed to make the main focus of each image i took the technique which was used when taking the photograph. Here are the photographs i took as part of my research.
for the first part of the task i was asked to take photographs using different angles in order to give each image a different look. Within the contact print above there are images taken from 5 different angles. The angles which I took the photographs from were birds eye view, worms eye view, eye level, high point of view looking down on something and a low point of view looking up to something. Using these different angles gives the object being photographed a different look and using different angles is a good way to add interest to what could potentially be a boring object before different angles are introduced.
i was then asked to take some photographs using different formats. the format of a photograph is the shape or form of which the photograph takes. in the contact print above I have displayed three formats most commonly used within photography. The formats which i have shown are vertical (portrait), horizontal (landscape), and square. Each of these formats has its advantages and disadvantages as the subject matter of the photograph will most likely fir one format better than the others. Horizontal formats are most commonly used in landscape photography whereas vertical formats are most commonly used within portrait photography and square formats are used most commonly to photograph symmetrical objects as it can appear that the subject has been reflected from one half of the square to the other if done accurately. However, these are not strict guidelines and and the subject of each photograph can be switched and changed depending on what it is you are photographing and how you want the photograph to look. Some formats will work better than others within some circumstances as changing the format can help to fit all of the subject matter into the photograph and it can also help illuminate any unwanted open spaces.
After this i was asked to explore rule of thirds, leading lines and perspective and to include these aspects into the photographs that I was taking. Leading lines in photography are lines which guide the eye around the photograph so the viewer sees what the photographer wants them to see first. Leading lines tell the viewer where to look and when intentionally used can look very effective. When leading lines are used in unintentional circumstances, the can either work well to lead the viewers eye to the correct part of the image or the can work in a negative way and lead the viewers eye away from the intended subject matter and prove to be a distraction. Rule of thirds is another aspect to consider when composing a photograph. rule of thirds is when the subject matter of a photograph is contained within one of the thirds of the photograph making the subject sit off centre allowing other aspects (or most commonly, blank space) to fill the remaining area of the photograph. The last aspect of composition which I explored within this research was perspective. perspective is split into two different types Aerial perspective and Linear perspective.
This is one of the photographs I took to show of the birds eye view angle. A bids eye view is when you take a photograph looking directly down onto the object which you wish to photograph. In this case, the object which I chose to photograph was one of the small water fountains in City Park. with this water fountain, because it was only small, i was able to get up close to it and hold my camera up above the fountain itself to create this image. for this photograph, i made sure i used a fast shutter speed, this enabled me to capture the water droplets as they splashed away from the main jet of water. I really like this photograph as i feel that this is quite a unique viewpoint of a water fountain as you rarely get to see a water fountain from above. If i was to change one thing about this photograph, it would be the lighting. the lighting in this photograph is a bit too dark, this is because the lights which are positioned at the base of the fountain are bright making the rest of the photograph seem darker than intended therefore if i was to re shoot this photograph i would try to find a solution to this.
this is one of the photographs i took to show the angle of eye level. eye level photography is probably the most common angle used in photography as it is extremely simple and easy to capture what you can see in front of you as a photograph. This photograph is of the water fountain archway which is found in city park. to take this photograph i stood at the end of the arch way and shot the photograph looking straight through the tunnel made of water. I like this photograph as although there is more going on within the photograph, the main focus point of the photograph is the fountains as this feature is nice and central in the frame.
This is one of the photographs i took form a high view point. photographs taken from a high view point look down on the subject making the subject look as though it is of less importance than other things around it. this photograph is of some cars in a car park and was taken from a window from a floor which was on a higher level than the car park meaning the cars were below be when taking this picture therefore any photographs which i may have taken from this position would have had a high view point as their main angle. i am happy with the way this photograph looks as i like the range of colours captured within this image. if i was to change one thing about this photograph it would be that i would move the camera to the left slightly in order to capture more of the red car. this would mean that the picture would have more bright colours within in ad it would make it more eye catching and interesting.
this is a photograph i took to show off low view points. To take a picture using a low view point, you have to make sure you are in a position so that the object which you are photographing is higher than the camera. doing this makes it look like you are looking directly up at something when you look back at the photograph which you have taken. By using this technique when taking photographs, it gives the object which you are photographing more importance and authority. The photograph i have taken is of a tree but taking it from this angle makes it look as though the tree is of more importance than the other things around it. this is a common trait for photographs taken in this manor.
this is a photograph i took to represent the angle of a worms eye view. a worms eye view is a very low level photograph and looks as though the world is being viewed through the eye of a worm who, because of its nature, is extremely close to the ground. this photograph is of a tree trunk and was taken by placing my camera on the bench and photographing the tree from this angle. i took this photograph in thins way as i thought about an actual worm, if the worm was on the bench looking towards the tree at the same angle as i had my camera set up at, i imagine this is very similar to the view point it would have. to add interest to this photograph, i focused my camera on the actual tree trunk itself making the other aspects of this photograph such as the bench, which my camera was set up on, out of focus.
This is one of the photographs i took while exploring different formats within photography and this is the photograph i took for the 'vertical' or 'portrait' format. i chose to photograph one of the sculptures in City Park as i found this shape interesting and i thought it would fit into this format particularly well as it is the right sort of shape tp fill the area of the photograph if the photograph is taken in this format. by using this format when taking the photograph, it means that the sculpture is able to be nicely framed within the photograph without leaving any unnecessary and unwanted open spaces which could then distract away from the subject of the photograph.
this is another photograph i took while exploring different formats within photography. This is the photograph i took to showcase the square format. The square format is most commonly used on social media websites such as Instagram as most regular publications of images are a rectangular formal making them either portrait or landscape. As my camera does not have a setting in order to take photographs in the square format to begin with, I originally took this photograph in a landscape format with the intentions of cropping the image to then be in a square format. this meant that when taking the photograph, i purposely made sure there was nothing important within the outer edges of the photograph which would then be lost. When taking this photograph, i visualised the square in which the main focus of the photograph would fit meaning that when i came to crop the photograph, the subject would be exactly where i wanted it and i would only be cropping the photograph to achieve my desired format rather than cropping to eliminate unwanted aspects of the photograph. This is a photograph of a small group of purple flowers with a yellow centre which i found growing in a flower bed in City Park. This small group of flowers were surrounded by leaves and other similar flowers as seen in the greenery and small pink patches within the photograph, however when taking this photograph i wanted to isolate this one particular group and photograph them alone. In order to do this, I got up close to the flower itself and used an aperture which would give me a shallow depth of field. the shallow depth of field means that the flower itself and the leaves in the foreground are perfectly in focus but the background and the rest of the photograph has been dropped out of focus. i think this works well for this photograph as it draws more attention to the flower itself making the vibrant purple of the petals very eye catching. As the focus of this photograph is on the flower and the eye is drawn to the purple petals, the eye is also drawn to the water droplets which are a result of the rain that fell not too long before taking this photograph. I feel that the water droplets on the petals work well with this photograph as they add more detail and interest to the photograph. In addition to this, I feel that this photograph works well in a square format as the flower fits nice and central in this photograph as it is at an equal distance from each of the sides of the photograph. If this photograph was in another format such as portrait or landscape i feel that there would be too much unwanted and unnecessary space within the photograph which would ultimately distract from the main subject of the photograph.
this is the third photograph i took when exploring different formats within photography. This is the photograph i took to showcase the 'horizontal' or 'landscape' format. The landscape format is one of the most commonly used formats as it is very east to capture photographs in this way. This format is used a lot as this is the format that most cameras automatically shoot in. Without turning the camera on its side, or later cropping the photograph, this is the format that most photographs will be created in by most cameras. This photograph shows the view looking out of the bottom of City Park. I chose to photograph this as an example of the landscape format as i felt that there was quite a lot in this scene that i could incorporate within this photograph such as the unusually designed lamp post, the flower bed and the trees. as all of these components are spread out quite a lot, I thought that the landscape format would be the best to use as it means that everything is allowed to be captured within the photograph without sections being lost had a portrait or square format been used.

Christmas Task
Over the Christmas break, i was asked to document the holidays through photography. I did this by taking a photograph each day to show what i was doing or where I was on each day.
Here are the photographs I took, each titled with the day on which they were taken.
22nd December 2014
This is the first photograph which I took as part of this task. This is a photograph of some red baubles situated on my black Christmas tree. The location of this photograph is my front room in my house and the time of day which this photograph was taken was reasonably late in the evening meaning that the lighting in this photograph is reliant on artificial lighting and the flash on my camera. The artificial lighting in this photograph is provided by the main light in the room which gives off a yellow-ish glow however the light which can be seen within the photograph looks white, this is because of the flash on my camera which emits a bright white light. the lighting in this photograph works well because the baubles inn the foreground of the image are prominent and stand out whereas the branches of the Christmas tree are darker and fade into the background slightly meaning the main focus of the image is the bright red baubles.
23rd December 2014
This is the second photograph I took as part of this task. this is a photograph I took of a scent in my living room at home when I was watching the film Dumbo. The location of this photograph is again, the front room of my house. This photograph was taken in the late afternoon meaning that the sun was setting and the natural light which would have been let into the room via windows would have been reduced. This means that in order to be able to get sufficient light to take the photograph, artificial lighting would have to be used alongside any natural lighting which is present. From the top left hand corner you can see the small amount of natural light which is able to entre the room, this natural light was also entering the room from a window which is situated behind the camera and slightly to the right allowing a little light to be allowed into the room. The majority of the light in this photograph is emitted from the lights on the Christmas tree and the light from the television with the rest of the room being darker only lit with the orange glow from the Christmas tree lights. I feel that this lighting works well for this photograph it makes the television and the Christmas tree the main focus points of the photograph.
24th December 2014
This is the third photograph which I took as part of this task. This is a photograph of my friend with her 6 month old son in her arms while her son is holding onto her finger. this photograph shows my friends son sleeping in her arms gripping onto her finger. I really like this photograph as it shows the size difference between mother and son and it also shows the love and tenderness of the relationship they have together. This photograph only shows the two hands, with the baby's comforter just behind their hands. I purposely shot this image in this way as I wanted to capture the size difference in a sweet and more intimate way rather than just showing the difference in size by taking a full length shot of my friend holding her son. if I had have been to capture the image in this way, I would have lost some of the intimacy of this photograph and the impact of this photograph would have been less effective however the main point of showing the difference in size would still have been there. In addition to this, the lighting in the room when I was taking this photograph was dark and not ideal for taking photographs as it was the best way my friend could get her son to settle at this time. This meant that in order to get this shot, I was required to use my cameras flash. Before taking this photograph I made sure I asked my friend if it would be okay to use the flash as I did not want to unsettle her son who was peacefully sleeping in her arms. I feel that the lighting in this photograph works well as the photograph is clear and bright making it easy to see what is going on within the image. One way in which I could potentially improve this photograph would be to change the lighting slightly, by introducing some slightly yellow toned lighting, this would make the photograph look warmer therefore emphasising the idea of the tender and loving relationship shown within this photograph. However, one bad thing about this photograph is that the camera has been focused on the wrong point making the main subject of the photograph out of focus which is not ideal. As I used autofocus with this photograph, the camera has focused itself on the soft toy behind their hands rather than on the hands themselves which would have been the ideal shot. I would love to reshoot this photograph as i love the idea of the photograph but i do not like the fact that the main subject of the photograph is out of focus. if i was to reshoot this photograph, i would take extra time to refocus the camera so that the focus is on their hands and not the soft toy. this would make the photograph sharper and clearer and more appealing to look at overall.
25th December 2014
this is another of the photographs I took as part of this task. this is a photograph of my mum sitting at the dinner table on Christmas day laughing at something which someone who is out of the shot has just said. The location of this photograph is the dinner table on Christmas day at my older sisters house as this is where I spent Christmas day with my family. The lighting in this photograph is a mixture of natural and artificial lighting with light from a window which was behind the camera providing the main source of light and the artificial light from the kitchen adding to this a little. You can tell that the light which is coming from the kitchen is being emitted from an artificial ceiling light as the lighting changes from natural looking lighting to slightly yellow toned lighting which is common within artificial lighting which is used within the home. I like this photograph as is it very natural and not forced. You can see that the smile on my mums face is because she has found something funny and not because she is purposely forcing a smile for a camera, this is made obvious as she is looking away from the camera and at another person who she was talking to at the time. If I could change anything about this photograph it would be that I would close the door leading to the kitchen as the change from natural to artificial lighting in this photograph is a little distracting.
26th December 2014
This is another photograph i took as part of this task. this is a photograph of my one year old dog, Timmy and the location for this photograph is the front room in my house. When I was taking this photograph, I was just taking random photographs of things that I could see as i was playing around with the new camera i got on Christmas in order to see how it worked and Timmy sat on the floor by my feet as if to ask for his photograph to be taken. The way he has positioned himself in this photograph makes it look almost as though he is posing for the camera, which i think is a really nice touch to the image. The lighting for this photograph is reliant on artificial lighting as the living room light was on and have used the flash on my camera to capture this photograph in the best possible way. Looking at this photograph, it is obvious that the flash on my camera has been used as it is clearly seen reflected in his eyes. As i wanted to capture this image quickly so Timmy didn't move, which he has a habit of doing, this means that the composition if this photograph is lacking as there are unwanted aspects included such as the table leg running all the way down the left hand side of the photograph and the small pink blur in the bottom right hand corner of the photograph. If I was able to reshoot this photograph, I would make sure the unwanted aspects were not included within this image.
27th December 2014
This is another photograph I took as part of this task and it is a photograph of the snow covered trampoline which is in the back garden of my house. To take this photograph, i chose to wait until it became dark outside and to use the flash on my camera. I chose to take this photograph in this way as i thought it would add more emphasis to the bright white snow and show off the the glistening ice within the snow itself. Taking this photograph in this way does have its disadvantages however, the main disadvantage being that the flash has reflected a little to much in the foreground of the photograph making the snow on the trampoline closest to the camera a lot brighter than the rest of the photograph. This brighter section of the photograph does not work well within this photograph as it draws the eye to this patch rather than the rest of the photograph which was intended to be viewed. If i was to re take this photograph i would try to find alternative ways of lighting this area in order to eliminate this bright patch and make the photograph more appealing to look at overall.
28th December 2014
This is the photograph i took for the 28th of December and as it a few days after christmas, i chose to go down into Baildon village and take a photograph of the Christmas tree which is put up in the centre of the village each year. In order to take this photograph, i chose to wait until late in the afternoon, when it had just started to get dark as i thought the combination of artificial lighing and small amount of natural lighting would work well together for this photograph. You can tell from the colour of the sky in this photograph that it was not fully dark at the time of taking this photograph, yet it was dark enough for the street lights to be on and the lights on the christmas tree to be bright and visible. The main reason i waited until it was getting dark to take this photograph is because of the lights on the chrstmas tree as i thought they looked nice when lit and they are not visible in daylight and if it were to be completely dark when taking this photograph, not much else would have been visible except the street lights and the lights on the tree. The Christmas tree is the main focus point of this photograph, however, the rest of the village is shown in the background of the photograph and is lit by the orange glow of the street lights. I like this photograph as i think the contrast between the multicoloured lights on the christmas tree and the orange light which is cast over the entire village is interesting and very aesthetically pleasing.
29th December 2014
This is another photograph i took for this task which is focused around the snow which fell around this time in December. This time, i chose to take a trip to Baildon moors when i found a snowman which somebody had build previously overlooking the large snowy area in front of him. As there was only a small amount of snow which fell at this time, this means that there are patches of grass which peek out through the snow and there is a lot of grass, especially in the background of the photograph, which does not appear to have much, if any snow covering it. The contrast in colours between the snow and the grass peeking through it is one of the main things i like about this photograph as i believe it adds interest to the photograph and is more appealing than if i were to have taken the same photograph but with the entire scene white over. I took this photograph during the mid afternoon, around 2 O'clock relying solely on natural lighting and as this time of year has extremely short days, the light at this time was beginning to fade, this is why the lighting within this photograph is not as bright as it could have been. However, i feel that the lighting within this photograph works well as the setting sun predominantly illuminates the top portion which, if left any later when taking the photograph, would have been a little too dark. the top part of this photograph has been lit in such a way that the photograph seems to have been evened out as the top part of the photograph needs to be lit enough so that it does not look too dark and out of place against the bright white snow in the foreground and i feel this has been done well within this photograph and i am very pleased with the way this photograph has turned out.
30th December 2014
This is a photograph i took while i was out at the opticians just after getting my eyes tested. This was just a qhich photograph which i captured with my mobile phone as i was in a bit of a rush to get things done this day and did not have time to get a fully considered shot. As this shot was quick and not well considered, this means that the entire photograph is off centre and a little wonky. This could be corrected if i had spent a little more time when taking this photograph and ensured that the photograph would be straight. As this photograph was taken within an indoor location, the lighting relies mainly on artificial lighting which was provided by the ceiling lights above.
31st December 2014
this is the photograph i look on new years eve whilst i was out. on new years eve, i went to see in the new year at a pub in baildon village with my boyfriend so this is a photograph i took while there. This is a photograph of the bar area and again this photograph was taken using my mobile phone as it was the most convenient to take out with me on that night. this photograph relies completely on artificial lighting which is present within the pub. There was not much lighting in this particular area however, the area at the back of the bar is well lit and i feel that this works well for this photograph as there is an array of colours in this section of the photograph and this was where i wanted the main focus point of the photograph to be and i feel that as this area is the brightest within the photograph the eye is drawn most to this area making it the main focus point as intended.
1st January 2015
this it the photograph i took for this project on new years day. I spent new years day just relaxing with my family and my boyfriend and spent most of the day playing pokemon with my boyfriend so this is what i chose to take this photograph of. This photograph is reliant on artificial lighting from the main light in my living room at home, however i feel that this was not the best lighting choice. I feel that the lighing in this photograph is slightly uneven, meaning that this photograph is unintentionally brighter and darker in different areas. if i was to re shoot this photograph, i would look into different lighting methods in order to get the photograph to be well lit while minimising the unwanted glare which can be created by the lighting.
2nd January 2015
This is the photograph that i took on the 2nd of January and it is a photograph in my bedroom and it was shot as i was lying on my bed. This photograph relies on the artificial lighting from the one ceiling light in my bedroom. i do not feel that this is the best lighting for this shot as the photograph comes across as quite dull whereas if the lighting was better, i feel that this photograph has the potential to look a lot better and a lot more eye catching than it currently is. this is one of the things which i would consider if i was to reshoot this photograph. in addition to this, this photograph was taken on my mobile phone, this could be a reason for the quality of the photograph not being as high as that of photographs taken with my camera. this means that this is another of the things which i would change or reconsider if i was to reshoot this photograph.
3rd January 2015
this is the photograph i took for the 3rd of january and is a photograph of a section of the shelf which holds my DVDs and my 3DS games. The location of this photograph is in my bedroom as this is there the shelf is location. The location of this photograph cannot be changed as the object which i have made the focus of the photograph (the shelf) is large and not easily moved to another location. i also feel that as the lighting within this photograph is reliant on the artificial light from the ceiling light in the room, the photograph is not as bright and eye catching as it could have been had the lighting in the room been better. if i was to re take this photograph i would try to find a way to improve the lighting situation in order to make the colours within the photograph to stand out more and be more eye catching. i feel that this would improve this photograph greatly.
4th January 2015
This is the final photograph i took for this task on the 4th of January and is a photograph of the book which i was reading at the time with my bookmark marking the page. as with the previous two photographs, the location of this photograph is my bedroom and the light was reliant on the ceiling light which does not give off the best possible lighting situation for taking photographs. in order to make this photograph more appealing, additional light sources would be beneficial. the correct lighting would hopefully eliminate the glare on the book mark which has been created by the the ceiling light and would make the while of the pages in the book brighter and make the blue of the book mark stand out more. the correct lighting would make a big different to this photograph as it would make the image a lot more appealing to view. As previously stated, the location for this potograph is my bedroom, however, this could be changed as the item which i chose to photograph is small and easily transported to another location and the photograph itself is not location specific and could have been taken anywhere.
Diptych Analysis
This is one of the diptychs I created from the images which
I took whilst I was taking pictures of a certain genre within different
locations. The genre for these two images is ‘art’ meaning what both of these
images contain ‘art’ as the main subject. The first image shown here is a
photograph of an art exhibition within the Impressions gallery in city park and
the second image shown here is graffiti of an octopus on a wall. This diptych
shows the genre of art within different locations, one of which being inside
and outside. This fits in with the task which was set as I was asked to capture
the art genre within different locations making sure I used both indoor and
outdoor locations. These images are quite specific meaning that they could not
be taken in other locations as you cannot move the walls in which these art
pieces are sitting on for the purpose of the photographs. The composition of
both of these images is limited as they are both photographs which have been
taken of walls which feature art work. This means that the only way in which
the composition could be changed would be to change the angle in which the
photograph was taken from to give the image a slightly different effect. The
lighting within the first image is reliant on artificial lighting which there
is only just enough of within this image. To improve this photograph, extra
lighting would be beneficial in order to make the colours of the art pieces
really stand out and catch the eye. The
second image shown here relies solely on natural lighting meaning that natural
shadows are often cast. This causes a bit of a problem as half of the image
appears darker than the rest. This could be solved by either waiting until the
weather is at its best, finding the best time of day trying to find a good
angle which minimises the shadows cast or by setting up artificial lighting
which would compliment the natural lighting already in place and eliminate any
unwanted shadows. As there is only one main feature of each of these
photographs, the subject of both is clear and in focus. This makes the
photographs sharp and appealing to look at. Overall I am happy with these
images and I am happy with the way this diptych looks as I feel that although
there is some improvements which coul be made if I was to re shoot these
images, they are both in focus and
appealing to look at. I feel that these image work well being put together as
diptychs as they share the same genre of ‘art’.
This is another of the diptychs I created from the images I
took whilst I was taking images of certain genres within different locations.
For the second shoot I completed I was asked to re visit the locations which I
visited during the first shoot but this time with an inanimate object and
incorporating that into the scene. The location for these two images is the
same and it is that of the college cafeteria. This is a diptych I created for
the genre of ‘documentary’ as the images document what people are doing as they
are having lunch and socialising. This location could be changed if needed and
could be moved to any café or dining area where people eat and socialise as the
location for these photographs did not have to be specific to the college
cafeteria in particular. The first image shown here is just a general shot of
the cafeteria with people sat6 at a table towards the right of the image. In
this photograph, the entire scene is in focus showcasing the location in its entity
whereas the second photograph, the focus is solely on the subject which happens
to be an old Gameboy console with the background of the cafeteria blurred. I
feel that this techniques works well with this photograph as you know from the
first images shown in the diptych that the setting is that of a cafeteria but
the focus is taken away from this slightly as the subject becomes dominant
within the photograph. As the location of both of these images is the same,
this means that the lighting is the same in both of these images. The lighting
in these images is reliant on artificial lighting as the images were both taken
inside with artificial lighting illuminating the room. I think the lighting
within these images is good and I do not feel a need to change this. Overall I
am happy with the way these images have turned out as I feel that that
composition, lighting and locations work well together and make these images
visually appealing. I think that these images also work well together as a
diptych as they have the same location just a different subject matter.
